John Wesley Saatio, a slippery sex offender from the United States who escaped after being extradited from Costa Rica, was recaptured in Florida right before fireworks were set off to celebrate the Fourth of July.
According to a news report filed by Hana Frenette of the Pensacola News Journal, Mr. Saatio was intercepted by deputies from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. He was captured in a forest thicket near the Yellow River, which is part of the Wildlife Management Area under the purview of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Mr. Saatio’s capture was prompted thanks to a call made by a resident of Milton, the county seat of Santa Rosa in the Florida Panhandle. He was tracked down with the assistance of K-9 officers, and he was found to be in possession of tools, a water jug and a tarp that he had stolen from suburban homes. Deputies also found handcuff keys when they searched him.
As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, Mr. Saatio is a registered sex offender who first became a fugitive a little over a year ago as he escaped custody while being transported to a court hearing in Michigan. He ended up in Costa Rica, where worked briefly as a chef while he lived among U.S. expats in Jaco Beach until he was arrested by officers from Fuerza Publica (the national police force of Costa Rica) acting on a tip from a neighborhood watch group.
After his arrest, Mr. Saatio attempted to bend the bars of a holding cell in the Garabito canton precinct. He was later transported to the Temporary Detention Center for Immigrants with Irregular Status (Spanish acronym: CATECI), located in the populous Hatillo district of the capital city. At CATECI, he decided to initiate an asylum petition, which was later declined when he escaped from the detention center; investigators believe that this jailbreak may have been an inside job.
Mr. Saatio was apprehended at a bus stop in the Los Guido sector of Desamparados, a southern suburban district of San Jose. He was given a perp walk, which is highly unusual in Costa Rica; the Commissioner of Fuerza Publica was questioned about the curious parading of Mr. Saatio in handcuffs, but there was no clear answer.
