Guanacaste is the most popular destination in Costa Rica among tourists, this is no coincidence, of course Guanacaste has beautiful beaches, impressive natural reserves and you can find luxury resorts just as well as small eco-lodges to satisfy everyone’s taste. The beaches of Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal and Hermosa, are among the most visited.

Here we give you information on three other Guanacaste beaches that are incredibly beautiful, and close to the same Tamarindo area, perhaps you’ve been there already, in which case you can leave us your comments on them, but if you haven’t, take note and next time you visit Guancaste make sure to stop by.

Playa Junquillal: This secluded beach is 20KM (12 Miles) south of Tamarindo, a perfect place to spend some quiet time with your loved one, or by yourself, the place leads to relaxation, it’s not the best beach for swimming but it has good conditions for surfing. There are a few hotels in the area; the beach holds the Blue Ecologic Flag, which means it is usually very clean. Sunsets in Junquillal are breathtaking, so if you just want to stop by this beach to spend the day it’s a wonderful option.

Playa Avellanas: This beach is visited by many surfers, it’s close to Tamarindo (about 6 miles) but is not as popular, the road to get here is not in the best conditions but if you go in a 4×4 it is not a problem. If you are looking for the best spot to surf, this is a must stop. This white sand beach is the perfect place to spend the day laying in the sun. The currents are strong so you need to be careful, but under the right if conditions you can swim here and kids love the two miles of beach they have to run and explore. At low tide you can walk over the rocks and see star fish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, colorful fish and other marine life.

Playa Grande: Part of the National Park Marino Las Baulas, Playa Grande is a nesting site of leatherback turtles. This beautiful beach offers excellent surfing conditions; the rough waves makes it a bit difficult to swim, but if you are careful you can enjoy the clear warm water. The beach trail from Playa Grande leads to Playa Ventanas, not as beautiful as Playa Grande but younger kids like playing here since it offers tidepools that are great for bathing. The nesting season for the leatherback turtles runs from October to March, night tours are offered from Playa Grande and Tamarindo, but sadly sightings of these sea giants are becoming scarcer as they are an endangered species.

You do run the risk of falling in love with one or all of these places and you might find yourself wanting to find a permanent residence here.
