Two areas of San José’s La Sabana park have become well known spots for casual sex between men, reported Costa Rica’s Teletica Channel 7 TV.

The city’s largest green space by day is filled with runners, walkers, cyclists, and others enjoying the are which has been reforested over the past years with thousands of native trees. The Teletica report estimates around 38,000 people visit the park each week.

In two particular areas of the 72-hectare park, once night falls around 6 p.m., clusters of trees along the southern and eastern sides of the park offer perfect conditions for men to cruise for and hook up for sex.

Last week, Teletica captured some photographs of male sexual encounters near the park’s baseball fields along the southwestern side of the park at 6:15 p.m.

If police are nearby, the men shift to another area, said the report.

A Teletica investigator said he interviewed a man near the baseball fields who said he charges for sex with other men.

Men having sex with men without protection is the main mode of HIV transmission in Costa Rica, as in many other parts of the world.
