They are popular, charismatic, talented, liked and disliked by many and that’s the recipe for entertainment, which is why so many are trying to push Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of retirement and back into the ring to face none other than MMA star Conor McGregor.

This past Wednesday, McGregor, the UFC Lightweight champion, announced he had signed a contract with UFC agreeing to fight Mayweather; Dana White, president of the UFC has confirmed this and stated “The McGregor side is done; I’m starting to work on the Mayweather side now”; which is, we must say, the difficult part of the deal.

Fueled by the eternal battle intending to prove which sport is “tougher” or “better”; many experts call the mere possibility of this fight “ridiculous”, such is the opinion of Top Rank’s Founder and President Bob Arum who stated in an interview: “That’s ridiculous. You know, McGregor is a MMA guy and that’s a different sport than boxing. And if McGregor fought [Mayweather] as a boxer it’s a joke, shouldn’t be allowed.”

Yet, many see it as a money making event, a fight that would attract the attention of boxing and MMA fans alike, and they are certainly not wrong about this.

Many boxers, especially female boxers, have switched from Boxing to MMA, mostly because the talent and skill of MMA female fighters is better recognized than that of female boxers, in other words, they can get paid more money, the transition from MMA to boxing is not as common.

It has been proven in the past, (most recently by Holly Holm), that a professional boxer can switch to MMA and with proper training beat a skilled MMA champion (Ronda Rousey); but the question raises, is the opposite possible? Can an MMA champion train and practice professional boxing and defeat a boxing champion, one that is considered among the best in history? This has to date not been proven, and that’s why so many are interested in the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor fight happening. Will it ever?
