More than twenty thousand fans gathered at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and probably thousands more paid the pay-per-view, to watch the Canelo vs. Chávez Jr. fight, which was expected to be a war, instead, what they got was Canelo taking Chávez to school.

Canelo took a deserved unanimous win with a perfect score of 120-108 x 3; Chávez, refused to engage, despite his size and power advantage the son of the legend didn’t have a game plan, and worse than that, he didn’t show any heart.

Alvarez was the favorite going into the fight, but Julio César Chávez Jr. has always had a strong fan base, much of it perhaps inherited; a lot of bettors,however, picked him to beat Canelo based on his size; a big mistake.

Canelo, as usual, showed up well prepared, calm, smart; from the moment the bell rang he went to look for the fight, cautious at first, using his speed to stay at a self distance and avoid being surprised, he didn’t know yet what he was up against and he needed to be careful, round two came along, and he continued to jab his way to victory, round after round, the redhead gained more and more confidence, he had taken a couple of punches from Junior and was not impressed, just the opposite, making good use of his improved boxing skills he continued to punish Chavez, whose left eye looked swollen, and had a cut, Junior looked lost, confused, he didn’t know how to turn the fight around, not even when his father yelled at him between rounds to throw more punches.

When interviewed after the fight, Chávez Jr. simply stated “Canelo is a good fighter, and he has been more active than me”.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Canelo vs. GGG (Gennady Golovkin) fight scheduled for September 16.
