The second date of the Kolbi National Surf Tournament took place in Puerto Viejo, Limon and saw two new surfers take the lead, Malakai Martinez and Coral Wiggins in the male and female open categories respectively.

Malakai Martinez, from Guanacaste and only 16-years-old, took the first place in the Open and the Junior competitions, and he also set the records of the weekend with two best waves and combinations. Martinez had a phenomenal performance achieving a score of 11.44, beating the current national champion, Jason Torres who managed an 11.20, as well as Joseph Mendez from Jaco and local Jordan Hernandez.

“It was a very good weekend for me. I have come to this beach twice and luckily I was able to win an event I fought hard to win”, said Malakai.

Coral Wiggins, from Avellanas, Guanacaste won the Open competition beating Rubiana Brownwell, Zulay Martinez and Camila Summers.

“Thank you Puerto Viejo and everyone that came to support the event. I really wanted to do a good job this date and I did. I am very very happy”, stated Wiggins.

Playa Cocles in Puerto Viejo, offered good waves this Sunday in comparison to Saturday, with waves of 3-5 feet and good shape and size.

The first date of this tournament was won by Lisbeth Vindas and Leon Glazner.

The third date of the Costa Rica National Surf Circuit will take place in Playa Avellanas, Guanacaste March 17 and 18.
