Nicaraguan four-division World Champion Roman “Chocolatito” González, lost his WBC world title and his perfect record this Saturday after judges called a controversial Majority Decision win in favor of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai from Thailand at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

The fight was a war from the moment the first bell rang and kept everyone at the edge of their seats all through twelve-rounds of action. In the first round González was knocked down by the Thai fighter, but the Nicaraguan recovered quickly and fought back fiercely, despite also having a bad cut on the right side of his forehead; Chocolatito dominated several rounds (at least in the opinion of many boxing experts and fight fans),  but at the end it wasn’t enough for the judges, who turned in the scorecards: 114-112, 114-112, and 113-113 giving a Rungvisai the win by majority decision.

Compubox statistics (image included) showed Gonzalez landing 43.5% of his total punches (441/1013) while Rungvisai landed only 30.2% (284/940), the Nicaraguan threw a total 659 power punches out of which he landed 372 for a 56.4% effectivity and the Thai threw 764 power punches but landed only 277, which represents a 36.3% accuracy. Yet, the judges saw something completely different.

This is Chocolatito’s first loss in his professional career, and it was his first time defending the title in the 115 lbs division.

Golovkin beats Jacobs

In the main event of the evening, Gennady Golovkin successfully defended his world titles by defeating Daniel Jacobs in a unanimous decision win.

Golovkin dominated the entire fight against a worthy opponent, the first one to go the distance with the hard-hitting GGG since 2008, Golovkin landed 231 of 615 punches (37.6%), while Jacobs landed 175 of 541 (32.3%) per CompuBox. The judges scored the fight: 115-112 x 2 and the third judge had it 114-113. The fight was close but Golovkin deserved the win, he remains undefeated with 37 wins.
