Román “Chocolatito” González, will have his first fight of 2017 on March 18th at the Madison Square Garden in New York, he will be defending his WBC World Super Flyweight Title against experienced Thailand native Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (born Wisaksil Wangek).
This is also Chocolatito’s first fight since the passing of his longtime trainer Arnulfo Obando in November 10, 2016. Obando worked with González in three of his championship fights. This time his coach Wilmer Hernández, who has been working with Gonzalez for some years now, will be the main figure in his corner.
The four-division World Champion has been training in Costa Rica for several weeks in preparation for this fight; the country has become the preferred spot of the Nicaraguan as it has delivered great results for him in the past, this is the third time that the boxer prepares in Costa Rica.
Chocolatito’s team confirmed that today (March 8th) and ten days before the world championship bout, the defending champion is weighing 120.2 pounds (by March 18th he has to make 115 pounds), which means his weigh-cut is going according to the scheduled plan, by Saturday, after his last training session he should be weighing 117 lbs.
The Nicaraguan trains at the Fight Club gym in Escazú and reportedly had sparring sessions with Filipino fighter Bruno Escalante, he also had the opportunity to spar with Costa Ricans Bryan Vásquez and Fredy Fonseca.
WBC/IBF/IBO World middleweight Champion and WBA World Super Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin will be the main event in the card that takes place March 18th. Triple G will be facing Brooklyn’s own Danny Jacobs who holds the WBA World Middleweight crown.
