Hollywood legend Robert De Niro is fighting to restore the once luxurious K Club on the island of Barbuda in the Eastern Caribbean, reports U.K.’s The Telegraph.

The small island of under 2,000 inhabitants was a favorite spot for Diana, Princess of Wales, where vacationed with young Princes William and Harry in the winter.

The K Club, Diana’s home base on the island suffered a reversal of fortunes and closed 12 years ago, said The Telegraph. The 251-acre resort was built by the late Mariuccia Mandelli, the “godmother of Italian fashion,” and founder of the Krizia label. She closed the K Club in 2004, 15 years after having built it, said The Telegraph.

De Niro and his business partner, James Packer, son of the late Australian media mogul Kerry Packer, bought the remainder of the lease on the land from its previous owner.

“However, more than 300 of the island’s 1,500 residents have signed a petition objecting to the development, which they say is excessive and illegal,” reported The Telegraph.

The resort was once the island’s second-biggest source of revenue, but is now in disrepair.

De Niro plans to invest $250 million in the project over 10 years, but on the condition that they can lease an additional 300 acres surrounding the site, said The Telegraph.

In 2014, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda agreed to lease 555 acres of land on Barbuda to Paradise Found, the company formed by De Niro and Packer, who have been granted planning permission to restore, re-open and extend the K Club, said The Telegraph.

The company was charged just $6.2 million for the 198-year lease, the equivalent of a quarter of a cent per square foot per year.

Islander Mackenzie Frank, the man leading the protest group Barbuda People’s Movement, said: “No one objects to the K Club being re-opened, but they want so much extra land. There are an awful lot of issues at stake.” Mr Frank describes the agreement as “one of the biggest giveaways ever,” reported The Telegraph.

Under Barbudan law, the island’s 62 square miles are commonly owned by the people. In February 2015, the people held a meeting at which they supported the De Niro plans, said The Telegraph.

The islanders who are opposed to the massive project, say they will take the court battle all the way to the Privy Council in London if necessary, which is Barbuda’s ultimate court of appeal, concluded The Telegraph.

Barbuda is located north of Antigua, in the middle of the Leeward Islands. To the south are the islands of Montserrat and Guadeloupe, and to the west and north west are Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Barts, and St. Martin.
