$400 million will be the initial investment that Sun Latin America will make for the construction of Discovery Costa Rica, a theme park that will be developed in Liberia, Guanacaste. The construction is scheduled to begin in 2018 and during this stage it could generate close to 2000 jobs, the park is expected to begin operations in 2020.
The President of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solís along with Vice-President Ana Helena Chacón and the investors, officially presented the project, which will be part of “Discovery Destinations”.
The mega touristic project is being conceived as a world model of sustainable development, it will use clean energies and it is entirely designed under conservation principles.
“Thinking about a big Costa Rica, one that carries out projects for the benefit of its population and to help boost the communities, this is a practice that should make us work towards bringing investments and develop initiatives that are committed and aligned with our vision of sustainable development, creation of jobs and productive linkages that position our country as a destination that maintains a balance between biodiversity, the use of clean, renewable energies, and respect to the environment with a long term vision”, indicated President Luis Guillermo Solís Rivera.
“The alliance created between Sun Latin America and Discovery will translate into a better quality of life for Guanacaste and Costa Rica. We have to continue improving our competitivity, linkages, and the training of our human resource as well as multilingualism”, stated Vice-President Ana Helena Chacón.
The ambassador of the United States in Costa Rica, Stafford Fitzgerald Haney commented: “I am excited to support this exciting project which is of benefit to Discovery, the Guanacaste region and Costa Ricans, I congratulate the government for its commitment to positioning the country as one of the best destinations for sustainable tourism experiences. Discovery is the perfect ally for Costa Rica, and we are very excited about this investment; American companies invest more in Costa Rica than those of other countries, Costa Rica has a lot to offer to foreign companies and investors, a stable government with which the US government shares a long history of friendship and shared values, a convenient geographical position between the north and south American markets and very close to the United States; it is one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world, but above all these, one of the most valuable assets this country has is its people, Costa Ricans are the main reason of attraction of foreign investment, Costa Rica has a strong, talented and bilingual workforce, our embassy proudly supports many programs for the development of the human resource. This project is of great benefit to the Guanacaste community.”
The project will be developed in a property of almost 2000 acres (809 hectares) just 2.3 kilometers (1.43 miles) from the international airport Daniel Oduber and has already complied with environmental requirements established in Costa Rica’s laws; according to Chacón meetings regarding this project began in 2015.
The Minister of Environment, Edgar Gutiérrez confirmed that the Technical and Environmental Secretariat already gave its approval and water for the project will come from drilled wells that already exist in the property so it will not affect the water supply of the Guanacaste communities.
Ileana Rodríguez, representative of Discovery Costa Rica explained that the $400 million come from an investment fund; however, Sun Latin America will not give out information related to the investors, they only confirmed that all of them are foreigners from six different nationalities.
Once the project begins operations it is expected to create approximately 4000 jobs including direct and indirect opportunities.
The website DiscoveryCostaRica.cr and the Facebook page for the project will be launched on Thursday, April 20.
