The Melico Salazar Theater will be the stage where one of the most famous musicals will be presented for the Costa Rican audience, Chicago is brought to live from the hand of production company Luciérnaga Producciones and the Ministry of Youth and Culture, and will have ten presentations between May 12 -21.

Over 300 artists between dancers, singers and actors participated in the casting, but only 20 were selected. Actresses Sylvia Baltodano (Roxie Hart) and Isabel Guzman (Velma Kelly), take the main roles (they both also were part of the cast of West Side Story, the last musical presented in Costa Rica by Luciérnaga Producciones); while Adrián Céspedes gives life to Billy Flynn and renown singer Charlene Stewart is in charge of representing Mama Morton .

Director Adrián Castro stated “The talent involved in the different areas has taken the challenge with great professionalism, we are sure we are going to show the huge advance we have had in the country in this area of entertainment”.

The adaptation makes them have to create their own choreographies; these are in charge of Maria Amalia Pendones, inspired in the style of Bob Fosse, original choreographer of the Broadway musical.

The American musical Chicago is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, and it is based on a true story of a murder that took place in Chicago in 1924.

“Our country is rich in talented artists in many disciplines, all it needs is the boost to grow as a comprehensive artist and this is what we are hoping to achieve with musical theater, plus, it is one of the most complex and beautiful genres in the industry, full of complex details”, commented actress and one of the executive producers, Sylvia Baltodano.
