Maikol Torres ripping the waves in Guanacaste

Once again, perseverance paid off for up-and-coming surfer Maikol Torres from Costa Rica, who recently won the Reserva Conchal Tiki Hut Cup. The cup was disputed as the third event of the brand-new Guanacaste Pro Surfing Circuit. Conditions were excellent at the gorgeous Playa Marbella thanks to an inland breeze that shaped the swell into glassy 1.5 to 2 meter sets and quite a few tubes.

The Costa Rica Star has been following Maikol Torres since 2012. This young surfer is rising to the stature of local stars such as Jair Perez and Carlos Munoz. His first professional circuit victory took place in Playa Bejuco, not far from Jaco Beach in the central Pacific coast of Puntarenas.

Just a week before Christmas 2013, the Costa Rica Star reported on Torres’ performance as the 2014 Olympus National Surf Circuit started:

The sets at Playa Bejuco have been perfect for the competing surfers. The first heats of the competition for the Dunkelvolk Cup were dominated by Maikol Torres, [a young surfer] who triumphed over favorites such as Noe Mar McGonagle from Pavones. In fact, the four finalists at the heats for the Dunkelvolk Cup had never before been in a final, which means that the initiative of getting more young people interested in competitive surfing in Costa Rica is definitely working […] Maikol Torres succeeded by focusing on taking advantage of the best waves in each set.

The new Guanacaste Surfing Circuit is quickly becoming one of the most important surfing circuits in Costa Rica, and may one day become one of the most significant tournaments in the Americas.
