The bodies of Juan Manuel Retana and Emma Ramos Calderon, pilot and copilot respectively of the Cessna aircraft that crashed in the mountains of Guanacaste last December 31st were properly identified and released to their family members on Tuesday.
The Organism of Judicial Investigation (OIJ) informed that their identity was confirmed through dental records and forensic anthropology. The fact that both are Costa Rican and that their dental and medical records were accessible made the identification process a lot faster; Retana, who was 52 years of age was buried this Wednesday in Heredia, while 26-year-old Ramos was also buried today but in Coronado.
The remains of the other 10 victims, all from the United States are still in the forensics medicine building in Heredia; however, the website IsraelNationalNews.com (https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/408191) informed today that ZAKA (Identification, Extraction and Rescue – True Kindness), Israel’s rescue and recovery volunteer organization operating worldwide, “managed to identify the remains of the five US Jewish passengers who died two weeks ago when their plane crashed in Costa Rica”; ZAKA volunteers are dedicated to ensuring that the bodies of Jewish victims are identified, recovered and buried according to Halakha, Jewish law. According to the publication the remains will be flown to New York for their burial.
The Jewish family was formed by Bruce (50), Irene (51), Matthew (14), William (18) and Zachary (20).
Information on whether the remains of this family or the Weiss family have been properly identified, as the previously cited website states, has NOT been confirmed by the Costa Rican Investigative Police (OIJ) .
