Huma Abedin, one of Hillary Clinton’s chief aides, announced that she is separating from her husband, former Congressman Anthony Weiner, after his latest “sexting” scandal.

Weiner resigned his seat in Congress in 2011 after it became known that he was sending Internet messages with sexual content and photographs to different women, and in 2013 that same behavior ended his aspirations to become the mayor of New York City.

To date, Abedin had remained at her husband’s side, but over the past 24 hours the publication of new photos allegedly sent by Weiner to yet another woman have spurred her to break with him.

“After long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, I have made the decision to separate from my husband,” Abedin said in a statement sent to the media.

“Anthony and I remain devoted to doing what is best for our son, who is the light of our life. During this difficult time, I ask for respect for our privacy,” she added.

The New York Post published on its front page on Monday images that Weiner allegedly sent to a woman he had been exchanging sexting messages with since early 2015.

In one of the photos, the former Democratic lawmaker appears in his underwear on a bed and next to him can be seen a little boy, supposedly his son.

The recipient of the messages, who was not identified by the daily, sent Weiner photos of herself wearing a bikini and the paper reported that she is a supporter of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Since 2011, Weiner has been the focus of attention in the tabloids and this year he had once again appeared in the news due to the release of a documentary entitled “Weiner” concerning his failed New York mayoral campaign.

The film, which is currently playing in theaters, shows from close at hand the reactions of the former legislator and his wife to the second scandal that upended his electoral aspirations.

Abedin is one of Clinton’s closest collaborators, having worked with the former secretary of state and now Democratic presidential nominee in both of her two White House runs.
