The Central American Sporting Games kicked off this December 3 in Managua, Nicaragua and will continue through December 17.

Costa Rica has a total of 410 athletes participating in 27 disciplines, this Monday two of them won the gold medal.

The first victory came in Fencing, by the hand of Bradley Johnston who reached the final after defeating, among others, Cristian Mejías from El Salvador and Panamanian Arturo Dorati who was the favorite in this discipline, in the final Johnston was able to beat Gerber Morales from Guatemala 15-11 to win the first gold medal for Costa Rica.

The second gold medal was earned by swimmer Helena Moreno, in the 400-meter freestyle, Moreno also established a new Central American record with a time of 4:18.89 breaking the previous record of 4:24.28 which was set by also Costa Rican, Claudia Poll back in 2006. Gabriela Santis from Guatemala took the silver while Sara Pastrana from Honduras took the bronze medal.

Other disciplines that had participation today were rugby, where the Costa Rican National team took second place.

Costa Rican swimmer Bryan Alvarez took the third place in the 200meters butterfly.
