Guanacaste Wildlife Protected Areas
During the holidays the number of visitors to the Guanacaste Wildlife Protected Areas increases and therefore the Guancaste Conservation Area (ACG) establishes a special attention schedule for tourists to be able to experience the different areas.

The following schedules will be in place through Sunday, January 7, 2018:

Santa Rosa Sector:

The Santa Rosa Sector is an area of historic importance, it encompasses the Heroes’ Monument, the Casona de Santa Rosa Historic Museum and Los Corrales de Piedra. The area also holds and important biological diversity, natural resources and geologic history. There are three trails currently open which are the Universal Indio Desnudo trail, Mirador Tierras Emergidas (lookout) and the Heroes’ Monument.

This sector is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There’s camping areas available for up to 100 people with water, bathrooms, showers and BBQ area.

Playa Naranjo

The area of Playa Naranjo as we had informed previously, remains closed until further notice due to the bad conditions of the access road. This area suffered the effects of Nate tropical storm and authorities are still working on reestablishing access.

The access by boat to the Santa Rosa National Park is authorized and the surf areas are accessible. The payment to enter this Protected Marine Sector must be done in the Playas del Coco office.

Murcielago Sector

Closed until further notice, access is not possible through vehicle or by foot and the maritime access is also closed.

Junquillal

The 2km beach strip located in the Junquillal bay is open every day. This is a beach that received the Ecological Blue Flag, it is clean, beautiful and the conditions are perfect for swimming specially for children. It has a maximum capacity of 150 visitors and 80 campers; facilities include BBQ areas, tables water service, and bathrooms.

Open from 8 a.m. through 6 p.m. the access closes if the capacity of visitors has been reached for the day.

Las Pailas

This area has different trails that allow visitors to appreciate the secondary volcanic activity (bubbling mud and water pools). The access to the main crater is CLOSED due to the danger of eruptions.

Santa Maria Sector

The sector has several trails with a variety of attractions such as hot springs, cold water pools, and a lookout point. There’s also an old Casona (large old-style house) that used to be part of the Santa Maria Hacienda.

It’s open every day from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. There’s a camping area with capacity for 50 people with bathrooms and water available.

Some of the rules for visiting and camping in the protected areas include:

*No smoking
*No feeding the animals
*Dispose of the garbage adequately
*In camping areas lights must be out by 9 p.m.
*Keep noise and music in an adequate level
*Bicycles are not allowed on the trails
*In Playa Naranjo, do not swim across the estuary or lagoon since it’s an area of reproduction of crocodiles.
*Fishing is not allowed in the protected areas
*Do not take with you seashells, plants, rocks, seeds, wild animals, sand, or any other material that you may find in the area.
