La Ponderosa Adventure Park is celebrating the birth of the latest member of its family, an oryx by the name of Dan.

East African Oryxes are antelope’s native of Africa, they have a brownish-gray coat and their face and legs have white and black markings, their long horns are almost straight. These animals are endangered species, listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In Costa Rica there are already 10 specimens.

“All animals have a great value, the oryx as well as the giraffe are very valuable because they are endangered species, soon we may not have big wild animals in Earth, and it is very important to provide all the necessary resources for these animals to reproduce at Ponderosa”, stated Tania Pivovarova, veterinary of the park in an interview with Channel 7 Teletica.

Just a few days ago, Ponderosa Adventure Park in Liberia, Guanacaste celebrated the birth of Sofia, the giraffe number 14 in the park. In the last two years a total of 7 giraffes have been born in the country, six females and only one male.

Ponderosa Adventure Park, formerly known as “Africa Mía” opened doors 10 years ago in Costa Rica as a park with animals in controlled freedom, today it includes a total of 70 hectares and over 300 animals including native and exotic animals, among them zebras, watusis, dromedaries, oryx, nilgas, bongos, wildebeests and ostriches.

It has also evolved throughout the years and today it offers several different adventure experiences such as kayaks and tours to the La Perla Waterfall, canopy and horseback riding.
