The event “Sundays free of smoke” promoted by the Municipality of San Jose and that were so successful in past years will resume this 2017 starting February 12 and all Sundays through April 9.

In these events the objective is to motivate families to visit the capital city without having to worry about cars and the contamination caused by them, the activities take place in Paseo Colón which closes down for cars for the healthy enjoyment of families.

Different recreational activities like concerts, parades, dancing lessons, designated kids area, skate-park, an area for kids to ride their bikes or skates, among others, are part of the offering of the Municipality, the Sports and Recreation Committee of San Jose and the National Childcare Institution (PANI).

This year they have also added an area for those that wish to go with their pets. Here they will find grooming services, a canine park, and assessment by professionals on their pets’ health and proper care.

The Ministry of Health will also take advantage of the activities to promote their non-smoking campaign.

“When we first started with family Sundays Free of Smoke some years back, the idea was to close the Paseo Colon to give space for the recreational, sporting and cultural activities, and we said -free of smoke- because we didn’t want the smoke from the cars in the Paseo Colon, we’ve incorporated and alliance with the Ministry of Health, and now we also make reference to cigarette smoke”, said mayor of San Jose, Johnny Araya.

The initiative will be replicated in each of the provinces in the near future, starting with Cartago and Heredia.

The activities are free and a great alternative to see the city with different eyes.
