Costa Rican Police seized 213 kilos of cocaine on Wednesday morning, concealed in a van.

A Hyundai van was detained during a routine road check in the area of Turrúcares in Alajuela, the car was checked by the officers and a Yanko from the K-9 unit; it was the dog that alerted the officials of the presence of the drugs. The car was taken to the Alajuela police station where they proceeded to check the van thoroughly and found the packets hidden in a secret compartment within the floor of the car.

The driver was a 37 year-old man of last name Leitón, who had no previous offenses in his record, however, the van was registered under the name of a woman of last name Lázaro and who had a police record for illegal possession of firearm.

So far this year the authorities have seized over 24 tons of cocaine, some of which has been found floating in the ocean, hidden in containers, etc.

This same Wednesday the Drug Control Police (PCD) arrested a family of five members on charges of drug peddling.

At this point in 2017 the police have been able to bring down a total of 37 families related to the drug dealing business in the country related to the drug dealing business in the country.

“A series of operations that the Costa Rican Police (Fuerza Pública), which is part of the Ministry of Security has been carrying out in the different roads in the country, especially in Route 27, have the gal of strengthening the preventive and operative actions for the security of the inhabitants”, reads the information provided by the Police.
