It is official, Costa Rican midfielder, David Guzman, will be joining the Portland Timbers.

26-year-old Guzman has been playing for first division local team Saprissa since 2009 where he had become a key player, particularly for his ability to recover the ball. Guzman is also part of the National Soccer Team “La Sele”.

“There were several options, I analyzed it with my family, with everyone. What was good for the team , was good for me, and I thank God that the opportunity worked out for me”, said Guzman
“He is a technical, possession-type player and is smart positionally to help connect our midfield and back line defensively. David is also hungry to win more trophies and we feel his edge will complement the other players of our squad”, stated the Timber’s head coach Caleb Porter

Center Back Francisco Calvo, also from Saprissa, signed with Minnesota United, he is the second Costa Rican on the team’s roaster, joining Johan Venegas. Calvo is 24 years old and has played with Saprissa for over a year and is also a regular figure of the National Soccer Team.

Calvo is the third player from Saprissa to announce his departure to the MLS after defender Adolfo Machado also confirmed his transfer just a couple of days ago, to the Houston Dynamo. Machado is Panamanian and has been playing from the purple-white team since 2013, he was named the league’s foreign player of the year three years in a row and served as captain, he is 31 years of age.

“We believe we are adding not only one of the best defenders in CONCACAF and Central America, but also a consummate professional, a proven winner, and someone who will provide stability and leadership to our back line”, commented Matt Jordan, Dynamo’s Vice-President and General manager.

“We are losing a great leader (Machado), but we will keep moving forward to reach our objectives”, said Paulo Wanchope, Saprissa’s General Manager.

Transfers are pending receipt of the players’ P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate.
