Costa Rica’s Junior Surfing Team Continues Strong!

Costa Rican surfers have had a solid performance so far in their participation in the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Azores Islands, Portugal. Today, Joseph Mendez (U-18) took the first position of his heat in Round 1; Malakai Martinez who competed yesterday in U-18 and got first place, managed today another win this time in category U-16  also in the first round.

Leilani McGonagle got first place in Round 2 (U-18) with 11.43 points; Emily Gussoni managed a second place in heat 22 Round 2.  Leilani will face Japanese Matsuda Shino in Round 3 while Emily will compete against U.S.’s Maddie Peterson.

Esteban Chavez (U-18) and, Coral Wiggins (Girls U-16) and Andre Chacon (U-16)  came in with wins in the repechage round.

Zulay Martinez (U-16) took a third place in Round 2 and her score earned her a pass to the repechage round.

Aldito Chirinos, Oscar Urbina and Malakai Martinez will likely compete again tomorrow in Second Round.

With these results so far the complete Costa Rica’s junior surfing team continues alive and with very good shots of getting to the finals.
